TAYLOR, George Herbert

No. 5827291, Private, George Herbert TAYLOR
Aged 20

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Friday 31st May 1940

George Herbert Taylor seems to have been born in 1919 (Walsingham Q3-1919 4B:351), son of George Frederick and Margaret TAYLOR (née WILLIAMSON).
CWGC have his parents at Newmarket, Suffolk.

In the 1939 register, the family address is transcribed as Bunbery Farm, Swaffham Prior. There were his father George [19-9-1897] horseman on farm; his mother Margaret [22-5-1890] and brother Eric J [17-7-1921] apprentice carpenter.

George was posted missing, presumed killed, in the retreat at Dunkirk. The first batch of 1st Battalion men left Dunkirk on the 26th May, sadly George never caught up with them. 22 of his pals also died that day.

The regimental drums however were hidden from the Germans in a factory in Roubaix for the next four years.

George Taylor is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, France column 46
